Glass Think Tank

Fall 2013: Univeristy of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

Studio Professor: Camden Greenlee

Location: Champaign, IL

The Glass Think Tank is located in Champaign, Illinois. The programs for this learning facility include a research lab, library, gallery, administrative office and classrooms. The main thesis is to create program translucencies through thin repetitive structural elements, which are 4” circular steel columns that also function as partition walls. The repetitive structural elements create different levels of transparencies and translucencies throughout the building. It intrigues the public entering the building and makes them curious about the space. The double shell structure allows the building to be structurally stable and aesthetically appealing. Toyo Ito’s Sendai Mediatheque in Japan inspired the structure and envelope of the building.
