Revitalizing Fithian

Spring 2014: Univeristy of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

Studio Professor: Camden Greenlee

Location: Fithian, IL

Current metropolitan expansion, particularly in the United States, consumes vast amounts of agricultural land. In a world where the human population continues to rise and demands for food become greater, such modes of urban expansion are unsustainable. This project challenges contemporary methods of urban expansion and looks to define more synergistic urban-rural boundaries. The main idea behind the masterplan is to create a new central district within Fithian, Illinois, a bedroom community. To revitalize the area, an institute for

agriculture research is introduced to the town. It aims to bring people from nearby towns like Champaign and Danville and it also will create job opportunities for the local residents living within the area. The main campus is strategically located along US 150, the connector between Fithian and adjacent towns. Programs such as research laboratories, classrooms and planting fields are distributed evenly throughout the town. By designing a new learning facility, Fithian would be able to attract more professionals and grow economically.
