The Sustainable Series
This was part of a virtual exhibition, Dreamscapes, hosted by CallisonRTKL for the Seattle Design Festival 2020
I imagine Seattle to be one of the leading sustainable cities in the future. People around the world would travel to this city to learn about the various methods used to achieve this. My sketches (Episodes 1 - 5) explore the different possible ways to build without impacting the environment negatively. Rather than constructing more buildings and demolishing existing ones, we will recycle shipping containers and repurpose them. They will be installed as temporary structures on buildings for different programs such as shelter and entertainment. It can be easily deconstructed and moved to another site if needed. When placed in nature, these temporary structures can be reconfigured into treehouses to blend with its surroundings and will have a minimal building footprint. It will also have a water catchment system at the top to collect rainwater for reuse. To generate energy, we will install wind turbines and solar panels on existing buildings to offset the energy load used in the city. By doing so, buildings will not just be consuming energy but producing enough to be added to the city’s main network. The streets downtown will no longer be accessible to cars but transformed into walkable paths for people to feel safe and comfortable. Shipping containers can also be placed along the streets for shops and restaurants to operate from. This would hopefully decrease carbon emissions and encourage a healthier lifestyle. Planting more trees and plants throughout the city will help reduce the excess carbon dioxide that is warming the city. Walkways and parks will also be built at the waterfront to create a better connection between the city and water for people to enjoy. These are just some ideas that I think might make Seattle a little greener and more sustainable for future generations.
